Our Research Methodology

Last updated: June 5, 2026

Summary

VisaCross aggregates visa-requirement information from official embassy and government sources, supplemented by independent travel-policy datasets and traveler reviews. We publish the methodology behind every figure so readers can verify our work.

Primary Sources

Our visa data is compiled from:

  • Official embassy and consulate websites of each destination country
  • Henley Passport Index and Arton Capital Passport Index for visa-free-access counts
  • IATA Travel Centre for transit and entry-rule clarifications
  • IATA Timatic database for cross-checking visa categories and travel documentation
  • Consular bulletins and travel advisories published by destination governments
  • Verified traveler reviews submitted by VisaCross community members

Editorial Process

  1. A route enters the database when its destination is on our active country list and at least one official source publishes its requirements.
  2. Numeric figures (fees, processing days, approval rates) are normalized: fees in USD, processing days in business days, approval rates in percent.
  3. Country-specific document additions (e.g., US DS-160, Schengen insurance, MENA attestation) are encoded as deterministic rules per destination.
  4. Pages are republished automatically when source data changes, and the "Last reviewed" timestamp updates accordingly.
  5. Reviews are moderated by anti-spam controls (honeypot + rate limit). Approved reviews feed our public aggregate ratings.

Limitations

No automated visa-information system can be perfect. We are transparent about the following limits:

  • Visa policies change without notice — verify with the destination embassy before booking travel.
  • Individual case factors (travel history, prior denials, employment status) materially affect outcomes beyond the documented requirements.
  • Fees may include or exclude service charges depending on the application channel.
  • Consular officers exercise discretion on borderline cases. Our approval rates are statistical estimates, not guarantees.

Reporting Corrections

If you spot an inaccuracy, please contact us. We review every correction request within 5 business days and update the affected pages with a revised "Last reviewed" timestamp.

Editorial Independence

VisaCross is reader-supported through advertising and affiliate commissions. We never accept payment to alter visa-requirement information. Our affiliate partners (hotel and flight aggregators) have no influence over the visa data we publish.
